Not a first to think of when it comes to the most popular world travel destinations, but this central american country surely is putting it’s own stamp in the world of travel. I have to admit at first I was a little hesitant due to the stigma around certain places and the worry of how safe they are to travel to. Yes Guatemala did have so much civil unrest, but the government has managed to transform the country and it’s travel appeal image to the world dramatically the last ten years. The civil war is a thing of the past now and tourism is growing at a very steady speed.
The country has 33 volcanoes spread throughout the highlands. four of which are active. One being Pacaya Volcano. Trekking to this natural beauty is an amazing experience offering unforgettable views the entire way. Trekking the path in the afternoon after 4 pm provides the best lighting and sets for the most spectacular sunsets. Horses are also available for the trek.
Aside from Pacaya, Fuego is another active volcano. In fact Volcano Fuego was spewing when I was there. The locals in Antigua informed me that the volcano had started spewing a few weeks before. I did not think of it too much at the time until a few days later after arriving back home I heard that the volcano had erupted and closed down the international airport. I guess I missed it right on time.
The volcanoes in Guatemala are very prominent through out the country. They can be seen from most major cities and produce great backdrops to many major sites of the country. Lake Atitlan is one area formed around three major volcanoes that surround the massive lake. Their are small mayan towns that have formed around the lake and provide great tourism options for both domestic tourists and international travelers. Volcanoes are a prominent part of the Guatemalan landscape, culture and story. That said, they are only one of the many great features the country has to offer to travelers who want to explore it.
