With countries like Mexico, Panama and Costa rica dominating the tourism sectors of central america, Belize always had seemed as a “one day” kind of place. Many people think of it when thinking of a cruise, being that the biggest draw in tourism for the country comes from the cruise industry. That said, the land offers such amazing natural landscape, that cannot be overlooked. A small country with a population less than 400,000 it sits tucked away between southern Mexico and Western Guatemala. Belize is both a Jungle Paradise and a marine Haven. The Western Part off the country is filled with lush jungles and the eastern part sits on the Caribbean sea, providing the best setting for tropical getaways.
Water lovers will fall in love with the Cayes and many of the islands in the archipelago. Divers and snorkelers flock to the second largest barrier reef in the world for stunning marine life in it’s most natural habitat. The Blue hole, a natural marine world wonder is a 2 hour boat ride from Ambergris Caye and is declared a Unesco world heritage site. The Islands of Belize also have formed small towns that have great island culture. I cannot mention the islands of Belize and not mention, Las Terazzas. A boutique hotel in San Ambergris that takes the level of going away to a whole new level, including a full dive shop facility with daily dive boats going out.
If the beach thing is not doing it , then Western Belize is the best contrast. Jungles , Mountains, Rivers, Mayan ruins and Wildlife all can be found in abundance. The infamous Actun Tunichil Muknal “ATM” caves featured on The National Geographic and Discovery Channel are incredible. Getting there is a rewarding adventurous trek that takes one deep into the history and culture of the Mayans. Swimming thru water ways formed inside the caves , zig-zagging around human reamins and skulls while trekking deeper inside the mountain is all an experience never to be forgotten. The only downfall, no cameras are allowed. That seemed like a big bummer at first but later I realized that kept me in the moment of the experience. Which later produced more vivid and detailed memories to look back upon and cherish.
Aside from the Jungles and the great landscape the area provides to some amazing history. There are various Mayan Ruins dotted around western Belize. History, culture and archeology fans will be delighted. In conclusion the country is a paradise from land to sea. Yes, it is a major cruise stop to many but my god it was such a nice surprise to see all the punch and variety this country delivered. #Traveldeeper #TravelToBelize
